Weekly Update Regarding New FAFSA Process

February 06, 2024

The U.S. Department of Education has implemented a new Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) system and process for 2024. Many students and families across the country, including in New Mexico, have been experiencing issues with the new system, such as screens freezing and problems with contributors trying to input information. The Department of Education is working to fix the issues, but until then, please be aware that may you currently encounter some challenges when filling out your FAFSA for the 2024-2025 academic year that begins with the 2024 Fall Term. Below are the most current updates and workarounds for glitches you may experience while filling out the FAFSA.

FAFSA 2024-2025 Submission Known Issues and Workarounds

  • The FSA ID process for parents with no SSN is unable to start a FAFSA form for student or unable to contribute to an existing form
  • No current workaround

  • Students who incorrectly select “eligible noncitizen” on the FAFSA are prevented from submitting the form after making the correction.
  • Workaround: Student can delete the existing application and then start a new 2024-2025 FAFSA form online

  • Students or parents who log into a saved FAFSA form that requires a signature from one or more contributors, have signature removed upon return without changing any information.
  • Workaround: The student or parent should re-sign the FAFSA form upon returning to the application, even if the student or parent is not making any changes to the form.

  • The names of some institutions are truncated on the college search page.
  • Workaround: The user can search by Federal School code instead of by School Name to identify the correct school entry. ҹӰԺ School code 004742

  • Students without an SSN who exited the FAFSA before the “state of legal residency” question, are unable to continue or start a new form. Parent(s) with foreign legal residence are unable to submit FAFSA form when parent has not filed taxes due to earning no income
  • No current workaround

  • FAFSA is unable to be submitted if parent contributor has entered a value for “income tax paid” that is greater than their “AGI.”

  • Married students or parents who do not provide a spouse’s information before leaving the 2024- 25 FAFSA, will not be able to complete and submit the form upon re-entry.
  • No current workaround

  • Graduate students with Pell-eligible SAI presented incorrect Pell grant eligibility information on FAFSA submission confirmation emails and pages
    • A graduate student who receives the incorrect message should be advised to disregard the message as graduate students are ineligible to received Federal Pell Grants.

  • Contributors are unable to enter an invited form from roles page
    • FAFSA contributors may log in to Studentaid.gov to access the form via dashboard or in My activity. Once logged in , the contributor also has the option to click on the link in the invitation email to be taken to the right place.

  • Spouse Contributors invitation page does not appear after user changes marital status from married filing jointly to married filing separately.
    • Impacted customers should log in to Studentaid.gov, navigate to My activity and select “Edit Contributor Information” and then “update information”. Re-entering the spouses information will effectively remove and re-add the contributor, allowing an invitation to be resent.

  • Student unable to proceed past student identity and information page when mailing address section is blank
    • Impacted customers should go to Account Settings, navigate to the Contact Information page, select the terms and conditions checkbox, and click save. Once the student navigates back to the FAFSA form, the mailing address will populate on the Student Identity and Information page.

  • Parent unable to access FAFSA despite starting application on behalf of student
    • A parent who encounters this issue will need the student to access or restart the 2024-25 FAFSA form. If the student logs in to StudentAid.gov and does not see the application under My Activity, the student will need to navigate to the FAFSA landing page, start a new form as a student, and invite the parent to the application.

  • FAFSA application status is “In Progress” even when user is ready to submit FAFSA
    • Student can enter the application and navigate through the end of the application to finalize and submit the application.

  • Confirm account settings does not continue past first page for user with foreign address and no error message shown
    • The user can temporarily modify the user’s address in Account Settings to one in the U.S. to proceed past the settings confirmation. Then the user can return to Account Settings and change the address to the user’s foreign country address.

  • Unable To Add Spouse or other parent as non-required contributor if spouse or other parent does not have an SSN
  • No current workaround
