Values Shout Out: Wilson Camargo and Casey Nelson

January 10, 2024

This past summer, while Wilson and Casey were patrolling Main Campus, they came across a student who reported seeing a large number of bees swarming around his car. Concerned that someone would get stung, they decided to take a look. Upon further investigation they discovered a huge beehive in one of our irrigation valve boxes.

The officers immediately recognized the danger of having a beehive in a busy parking lot and knew the bees could not stay. Concerned with the safety of the bees and our students, Wilson and Casey took action. They knew if they called pest control the bees would die, so they called a local beekeeper to see if they could help. After a few phone calls they got ahold of the Albuquerque Beekeepers Association and explained the situation. The beekeepers were happy to come out and try to remove the beehive at no cost to ÎçÒ¹Ó°Ôº. The removal process took some time but once the queen was removed the rest of the hive followed into the beekeeper's box. All the bees were successfully relocated without any bees, or students, being harmed.

This is a great example of how caring our employees are, how connected we all are to our environment, and how a small thing like saving some bees can have a huge impact on the rest of us!
