Values Shout-Out: Assessment Academy Team

March 30, 2023

Nomination by Kristen Ferris: ҹӰԺ started a project in Spring 2020 to develop a new process for assessing program level learning outcomes and general education essential skills. The formal assessment of program and gen-ed outcomes isn’t the most exciting or loved process  but this group of faculty and staff is meeting the challenge head on and embracing the change. This group is leading 38 different departments, covering 89 different degree, certificate, and general education programs through a 2-year pilot of the new process. They are also preparing creative supports for faculty professional development to promote understanding of assessment and the role that faculty play in that process as we prepare to roll out the Assessment Academy model to all academic programs in Spring 2024.

The Assessment Academy Team’s work also fulfilled the college’s commitment of a quality initiative, as required by our accreditor the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). The quality initiative process encourages institutions to take risks, innovate, and take on a tough challenge. This team has done just that and here is what the HLC has to say about the work of the Assessment Academy Team.

“The team at ҹӰԺ New Mexico has made significant progress in developing high-level, big-picture strategies for improving assessment at the institution and has begun to pilot a newly-refined process for documenting and responding to assessment results. Notable strengths include a focus on effective project management, securing resources (both human and financial) and providing multiple avenues for faculty support. The team is well-positioned to move forward in further developing their plans for cocurricular assessment and beginning to transition the work of the team to the institutional SAAC.”
