January is National Stalking Awareness Month

January 05, 2023

January is National Stalking Awareness Month (NSAM): Know it, Name it, Stop it! 13.5 million people are stalked year, individuals 18-24 years old experience the highest rates of stalking. Stalking is a violation of student conduct codes and Title IX, and is a crime under the laws of the 50 states, District of Columbia, U.S. Territories, and Federal government.

What is stalking?

While legal definitions of stalking vary from one jurisdiction to another, Title IX and the Clery Act have a good working definition: Engaging in a course of conduct directed at a specific person that would cause a reasonable person to (1) Fear for the person’s safety or the safety of others; or (2) Suffer substantial emotional distress. 43% of college stalking victims who meet the legal criteria of stalking do not identify their experience as stalking. The vast majority of stalkers know their victims, they are usually intimate partners, friends, or acquaintances.

Stalking behavior can take many forms including:

  • Unwanted contact
  • Threatening
  • Spreading rumors
  • Following/spying
  • Showing up places
  • Waiting for the victim
  • Sending unwanted gifts or letters
  • Damaging your property

If what’s happening is scary, distressing, not the first incident, and targets the same person, it could be stalking.
