ҹӰԺ Launching Operational Generative, Artificial Intelligence Project to Support Collegewide Use
ҹӰԺ is excited to launch its Operational Generative Artificial Intelligence Pilot Project, which will assist the College in navigating the continually growing demand for, and use of, artificial intelligence (AI) in the workplace and the classroom. This pilot project will serve as a foundational step towards broader AI exploration and adoption and will help to inform the College in the selection and adoption of generative AI tools, such as Microsoft Copilot and ChatGPT. Importantly, it will also be conducted in a manner designed to ensure the safety of users’ information, ethical guidelines, and support of ҹӰԺ’s institutional mission, vision, and values.
“AI is here and will only continue to be used more frequently, so we wanted to harness the best it has to offer, as well as to learn and grow together as a community as technology expands. We want to make sure we have a clear understanding of how AI is used, what supports ҹӰԺ faculty, staff, and students require, and how AI can be used to help streamline our operations, says Franci Phelan, ҹӰԺ’s Chief Human Resource Officer, and one of the project sponsors.
The first phase of this project is an AI training program specifically for ҹӰԺ executive assistants to evaluate and implement AI tools as part of an innovative, cooperative learning cohort. Along with a full day of training, a community of practice will be developed to help set up adoption processes and organizational guidelines for generative AI tools.
“I’m thrilled about the potential of our pilot training program for staff,” Olivia Padilla- Jackson, Vice President of Finance and Operations and another project sponsor. “This initiative not only aims to enhance our employees’ AI skills, but also has the potential to free up their time for more meaningful, higher-level work. Looking ahead, the use of AI offers promising chances for identifying risks and opportunities, increasing employee fulfillment and growth, and significantly benefiting our strategic planning and operational goals.”
Additionally, ҹӰԺ’s Presidential Fellows for Artificial Intelligence, faculty members, Patricia Wilbur and David Batzer, will be hosting a Faculty Learning Circle throughout the Fall Term to better understand the difference between operational and educational AI use.
A survey will also be sent out to all ҹӰԺ faculty and staff to gather feedback, ideas, and other input on the use of AI at the College. “AI is changing the way we approach our work, and the purpose of the survey is to help us gain a better understanding of how AI is already being used at ҹӰԺ,” says Victor Leon, ҹӰԺ’s Chief Information Officer and project sponsor. “This input is incredibly valuable as we discuss piloting AI in other areas, determine other use cases, and work on communication, training, support, governance. We really want all of ҹӰԺ to come along on this truly transformative journey together.”
Ultimately, this project will help ҹӰԺ implement collegewide, generative, AI tools, create an ongoing AI training program, and approve official AI policies and procedures in support of the College’s Strategic Plan, Goals, and Objectives. In the meantime, all project sponsors, Franci, Olivia, Victor, and the rest of the project team, want to encourage ҹӰԺ faculty and staff to share their perspectives and continue to explore the uses of AI in their daily routines.
“If you have thoughts, questions, or concerns that you would like to offer on this topic, please fill out the survey that will be sent out later this fall,” notes Dr. Phelan. “We also want to encourage you to keep an eye out for updates and reach out to any of us on the project team with have questions or insights that you would like to share.”
