ABQ CDL: A Year in Review

Over the last year, ABQ CDL, powered by ҹӰԺ Ingenuity, has more than doubled its enrollment, improved the health of its training fleet, and increased funding opportunities after restructuring and streamlining the program

ҹӰԺ has long been a leader in CDL training in New Mexico, and for many years CDL testing has been offered at the Workforce Training Center through ҹӰԺ Ingenuity. Last year, the College-Wide Integrated Program Review (CIPR) process informed the decision for ҹӰԺ and ҹӰԺ Ingenuity to combine resources into one CDL offering, and funnel all potential CDL students through the five-week ABQ CDL workforce training program. Now a year later, the program has had an impressive growth spurt thanks to the centralization of resources.

"When we restructured this program, our goal was to serve students even better and continue to provide the industry with well-trained individuals ready for work," says Kyle Lee, CEO of ҹӰԺ Ingenuity. "The past year exceeded our expectations, and ABQ CDL is an even more flexible, robust, and efficient program that is responsive to student and industry needs."

offers both CDL Class A and Class B accelerated training programs which include theory and behind-the-wheel courses. Students can also add passenger and hazmat endorsement courses to their training, allowing them to drive more vehicle types and carry passengers. Additionally, ABQ CDL is an approved examiner for the New Mexico MVD, which streamlines the testing process for students.

From 2022 to 2023, enrollment in the licensing course more than doubled from 100 students to 211 students. The license enrollment also saw an increase from 22 to 31 students.

On top of increased enrollment, ABQ CDL graduates are quickly entering the industry after completing the program. Over the last year, 80% of surveyed students were working as CDL drivers, with 90% of those students finding a job within just three months.

"By unifying our resources, we have not only improved our training fleet and resources, but we have simplified and improved the student experience," says Shanna Sanchez, Senior Program Manager of ABQ CDL. "We now offer training seven days a week and morning, evening, and weekend classes so students can continue to work and balance their other responsibilities. Our student to instructor ratio is significantly smaller than other training programs, we have 2 students to every instructor. The licensure test is scheduled into the five-week course since we’re a certified testing site, all of which help set our students up for success."

Another key factor in ABQ CDL's growth was increased funding support from various workforce training programs and the New Mexico Legislature. With the funding support, more than 75% of students received full funding for the course, providing more opportunities for students to break into this in-demand, good-paying field.

“A common concern for students is paying for this training, but we have plenty of funding for anyone who is interested in the program,” says Monica Walters, Program Director of ABQ CDL. “If you want to do this, there are plenty of resources to make it happen.”

Looking forward, Monica and Shanna expect the program to continue to expand – with the ultimate goal of continuing to send diverse and well-prepared students into the field.

"Our program is very welcoming and is ready to serve all kinds of learners, whether you’re right out of high school and want to start your career or you’ve been in the workforce awhile and want to change career fields,” Shanna says. “The industry is always looking for well-trained drivers, and we do everything we can to help our students have the best chance of getting a job as quickly as possible once they complete the program.”
